Their Story
A Life Dedicated to Helping Others
Sergeant Nicholas John Williams, affectionately known as Nick, was a dedicated police officer, loving husband, father and grandfather who devoted much of his life to helping others.
Nick joined South Wales Police in 2005, serving communities across Barry and the Vale of Glamorgan. Throughout his career, he undertook several roles, including neighbourhood policing and schools liaison work, before being promoted to neighbourhood sergeant in October 2022.
His commitment to public service extended beyond policing through his voluntary work with the Coastguard.
Remembered by colleagues as hardworking, knowledgeable and dedicated, Nick took enormous pride in his work and genuinely wanted to make a difference.
The Struggles Behind the Uniform
Behind his commitment to policing, however, Nick was experiencing significant difficulties in his working life.
He faced challenges surrounding his neurodiversity, workplace relationships, an unresolved complaint and increasing work-related stress.
Despite his years of dedicated service, Nick's wellbeing was deteriorating, and concerns about the support available to him would later become central to the inquest into his death.
A Devastating Loss
On 2 April 2024, Nick tragically died by suicide at his home in Barry, aged 54. He had been due to return to work the following day.
His death left a family grieving the loss of a much-loved husband, father and grandfather, and colleagues mourning someone who had dedicated so much of his life to public service.
Missed Opportunities and the Need for Change
An inquest concluded in October 2026 that opportunities to identify and address Nick's deteriorating wellbeing had been missed.
The coroner raised particular concerns about the absence of a workplace stress risk assessment and announced that a Prevention of Future Deaths report would be issued to South Wales Police.
Nick's death raises important questions about how policing organisations recognise psychological distress, respond to workplace concerns and fulfil their responsibility to protect the wellbeing of those who serve.
Remembering Nick
For Nick's family, his loss is immeasurable.
He was far more than the uniform he wore or the rank he held. He was a much-loved husband, father and grandfather whose life, service and kindness deserve to be remembered.
Through the It Stops Now Wall of Remembrance, we honour Nick's life, recognise his contribution to policing and stand alongside his family in the hope that lessons from his death will help protect others.
Nick's story is a reminder that behind every police uniform is a human being, with a family, a life beyond policing and a need to be heard, understood and supported.
